LECT received over 40 entries this year; double the entries received in 2018. This year's semi-finalists are from Auckland, Wellington, Lower Hutt, and Christchurch, and aged between 10 to 18 years old. The NZJPC Preliminary Adjudicator commended the excellent quality of music-making and the dedication from each applicant.

Join New Zealand's finest young pianists on a musical journey of a lifetime at NZJPC on 1-5 October 2020.

The 16 pianists will each perform a 20-minute recital programme with at least three musical periods included on Friday 2 October. Only six will progress onto the Final Round on Sunday 4 October and compete for a total prize pool of $4,000 and performance opportunities, sponsored by the Auckland Branch of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand, SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music, and Bach Musica NZ. Previous competition winners are Lixin Zhang (Burnside High School), Ashani Waidyatillake (St Kentigern College), and Delvan Lin (King's College).

The NZJPC programme also includes a performance from Lorelle McNaughton at the Opening Ceremony, a solo recital from Tony YanTong Chen (as part of his prize package as the winner of the 2019 Wallace National Piano Competition), the ever-popular Multi-Piano Open event, and two masterclasses led by NZJPC Adjudicator and celebrated New Zealand pianist, Richard Mapp. All events will take place at Lewis Eady, the home of Steinway & Sons pianos in New Zealand.
