MUSICAL JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

The NZ Junior Piano Competition (NZJPC), previously known as the Wallace National Junior Piano Festival (WNJPC) returns to Auckland for the fourth time in October 2020. Join New Zealand’s finest young pianists on a musical journey of a lifetime at the 2020 NZ Junior Piano Competition. Since 2014, NZJPC has become an indispensable platform for pre-tertiary pianists in New Zealand to perform at a national standard, receive valuable masterclasses from industry professionals, and connect with fellow pianists. NZJPC usually runs in conjunction with the NZ International Piano Festival in July. However, due to the pandemic, only NZJPC will take place in October.

NZJPC kicks off on 1 October with an Opening Recital by New Zealand pianist and previous Lewis Eady Charitable Trust beneficiary, Lorelle McNaughton, and the Competition Draw by 2020 Adjudicator Terence Dennis, an internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue. Tony YanTong Chen will present a solo recital on 3 October as part of his prize package as the winner of the 2019 Wallace National Piano Competition – renamed to NZ National Piano Competition from 2021.

Up to 16 pianists will be selected to participate in the competition from submitted DVD auditions. On 2 October, each competitor will perform a 20-minute recital programme with at least three musical periods included. Only six will progress onto the Final Round on 4 October to compete for a total prize pool of $4,000, and performance opportunities supported by Lewis Eady and Bach Musica NZ in 2021. NZJPC will conclude with the ever-popular Multi-Piano Open event and a masterclass for the finalists.

This year’s events will all take place at Lewis Eady, home of Steinway & Sons pianos in New Zealand.

NZJPC brings together the classical music community for an intensive weekend of performances and masterclasses. NZJPC is presented by the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust with support from SOUNZ, the Auckland Branch of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand, and Bach Musica NZ.
